Smith
Fuel Services Ltd., has been operating as a locally owned
business in the Fort St. John area since 1976. Currently
owned and operated by David Smith, the business was started
in 1976 by his father Mike Smith. Mike
had relocated to Nanaimo, British Columbia with his wife
Patricia after having resided in Fort St. John from the
age of 13. One day, he noticed an advertisement in the
local newspaper placed by Union 76, looking for a bulk
agent in Fort St. John and seized the opportunity to return
to the North Peace region. Mike replied to the ad and
Smith Fuel Services entered the bulk fuel market.
"Dad started the business in '76 with one truck,"
said David. "He and Pat returned to the Island in
2005 and spend their time with other business interests,
politics and grandkids."When
Fort St. John went through tough times in the early 1980's,
Mike continued to seek out new customers and markets,
temporarily downsizing until markets improved. It was
then that he advanced from single axle to tandem axle
trucks.
David was involved in the business from the very beginning,
becoming actively involved around 1979 when he began driving
trucks and performing mechanical duties during the winter
months. In the summer, David worked on the family farm.
In 1985, David began working full-time for the business,
starting at the bottom and working his way up to the office.
Ten years later, in 1995, he purchased the business from
Mike. "Fort St. John is the land of opportunity when
it comes to achieving things," David said. "There
is always something that can be done up here." David
said that for this reason, as well as always meeting customers'
needs, adapting to changing markets and the loyalty and
support of excellent, hard-working employees, Smith Fuel
Services has evolved into a successful and efficient operation.
Smith
Fuel Services primarily supplies bulk fuel to the oilpatch,
farmers and loggers but also supplies Chevron lubricants,
VP Racing Fuels and tank sales and rentals. Double-wall
Enviro Tanks have become a major focus due to environmental
concerns. A well established card-lock system at Ring
Border was followed by new card-lock stations at Peejay, Beatton River Airport, Laprise and Graham/Halfway, Tommy
Lakes, Jedney Key Lock, Alaska Highway, (Fort St. John) as well as the original Fort St. John Bulk Plant, with more planned for the near
future. While
the winter drilling season is the busiest time of the
year, diversity has enabled the operation to remain busy
all year round.What
began as a one single-axle truck business has grown into
a fleet of 14 heavy duty trucks, mostly tankers, 5 pickups,
a B-train, 2 super B-trains 1 tri-axle and a tracked Nodwell
vehicle, operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week."Our
staff and our service is the number one reason people
keep coming back," said David, "Also the longevity,
we've been here longer than any other bulk plant or agent
in the area and people like stability.Smith
Fuel Services has been a strong supporter of many community,
sports and non-profit organizations for many years, including,
Minor Hockey in Taylor, Hudson's Hope and Clearview, B.C.,
Overwaitea Summer Camps, The Child Development Centre,
Old-timers' Hockey, Crimestoppers, North Peace Gymnastics,
Burden Bearers, Ducks Unlimited, North Peace 4-H Clubs,
the Hospital Foundation and more."We
strive to provide the best customer service out there,"
said David, "If the customer has a need, whether
it's our level of expertise or not, we will try to help
them or see that someone does. We run 24/7 keeping everyone
busy and working. Everyone's burning fuel."
